Journeying Down Life's Never-ending Road

Sarcasm, irony, thoughts, complaints, ideas, philosophies, happenings, creations, rants and raves with a very little chance of anything being new, unique, or interesting.

Sermon Slides: Respect (plus 1 extra)

Don did a series on Character Traits. One week he spoke about Respect. So, here are some scripture slides I created to go with that theme.

Romans 12:10 - Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.'Romans 12:10

Photo by Penny Mathews found on Stock.xchng

1 Peter 2:17 - 'Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.'1 Peter 2:17

Philippians 2:3 - 'Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.'Philippians 2:3

Here is one that I did for our baby day that I haven't posted yet.

Psalm 22:30 - 'Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.'Psalm 22:30

Ten Commandments

This was a really fun series to do. The first challenge, of course, is determining which commandments are the 10 commandments. The lists which are commonly known as the Ten Commandments are given in passages in two books of the Bible: Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21 (compare side-by-side at BibleGateway.com).

If you count each "imperative statement," then you will quickly see that there are more than 10 commands. A little research shows that different religious backgrounds have parsed the commandments in different ways. I struggled with whether to follow the Jewish tradition or the Evangelical tradition. In the end, I went with the evangelical.

Commandment 1 - You shall have no other gods before me.Commandment 1

Commandment 2 - You shall not make for yourself an idolCommandment 2

Commandment 3 - Do not take the Lord's name in vainCommandment 3
I was stumped on how to illustrate this one for several weeks. I finally had a brainstorm and was able to find this picture.

Commandment 4 - Remember the SabbathCommandment 4

Commandment 5 - Honor your parents.Commandment 5
This is one of my favorite designs. I played with a few things to get this to work.

Commandment 6 - You shall not murderCommandment 6

Commandment 7 - Do not commit adulteryCommandment 7
Handling lust in a tasteful way is always difficult.

Commandment 8 - You shall stealCommandment 8

Commandment 9 - Do not bear false witnessCommandment 9
I actually wanted a picture of person taking an oath. But I couldn't find a good high quality (free) graphic to do that.

Commandment 10 - Do not envyCommandment 10

Covenants of God

The "religious tradition" of the church I attend is one that promotes the taking of the communion each week. Our church used to have one of the men share a short devotional thought and then pray over the emblems. I enjoy this practice because it gives me a chance to publicly speak/teach in a manner that I don't often get to because I am no longer in full-time ministry. However, a year or so ago, the leadership began requesting that men only pray over the communion and not share a devotional.

Being passive-aggressive I have come up with a round-about way to still share a message. When it is my turn I use my announcement slides and my prayer to share an insight. So, for this one, I wanted to talk about how God's covenants and how communion is a symbol of the covenant relationship we have with God. Each of these slides bring remembrance of God's faithfulness to the people He has made covenants with in the past.

As I prayed, I mentioned each covenant and the fulfillment of that covenant as a testimony to God's faithfulness.

Genesis 3:15 - I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.Genesis 3:15

Genesis 9:11 - I will establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earthGenesis 9:11

Genesis 12:2 - I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great and you will be a blessing.Genesis 12:2

Genesis 22:15-18 - I will indeed bless you, and I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore...and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.Genesis 22:15-18

Exodus 19:4-6 - You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now, therefore, if you will obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my own possession and you shall be to me a kingdom of priest and a holy nation.Exodus 19:4-6

Psalm 89:3-4 - I have made a covenant with my chose one, I have sworn to David my servant: 'I will establish your descendants forever and build your throne for all generations.'Psalm 89:3-4

Matthew 26:26-28 - While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, 'Take and eat; this is my body.' Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'Matthew 26:26-28
I didn't actually use this Matthew 26 one. After I made the slide, I found this one and thought it was much better, both execution and with my theme.

Pre-Election Scriptures

These are series of scripture slides that I did right before the election. All of these scriptures remind us that God is ultimately in control of the affairs of government, not us.

Romans 13:4 - The ruler is God's servant to help youRomans 13:4

Daniel 2:21 - You control human events-- you give rulers their power and take it awayDaniel 2:21

Proverbs 21:1 - The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord and He directs it wherever He pleasesProverbs 21:1

John 19:11 - Jesus answered, You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from aboveJohn 19:11

Colossians 2:9-10 - For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.Colossians 2:9,10

1 Peter 2:13,14 - Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do rightI Peter 2:13,14

Scripture Slides Catch Up

Its been awhile since I have uploaded scripture slides. So, we are going to play "catch up" over the next few posts. First, I will put some "miscellaneous" slides here. Then, I will do some other posts for a few series I have completed.

As always, click on the picture to access a larger resolution version. FWIW, I downloaded the Google Photo Screensaver and changed the settings to point to my directory of scripture slides. Now, when my screensaver kicks in, it loops through the scripture slides.

John 1:3,4 - He was with God in the beginning. All things were made by him, and nothing was made without him. In him there was life and that life was the light of all people.'John 1:3,4

Ecclesiastes 7:16-18.jpg - Do not be overrighteouse, neither be overwise. Do not be overwicked, and do not be a fool. The man who fears God will avoid all extremes.'Ecclesiastes 7:16-18.jpg
This was from a series that Don did entitled a Balanced Christian Life.

Proverbs 30:8 - Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily breadProverbs 30:8
Another slide dealing with living a life of moderation.

Revelation 3:15 - I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other.Genesis 1:2
This verse talks about NOT being moderate or balanced, but living your life to an extreme. A nice contrast to the other two.

Scripture Slides: The Backlog Edition

The scripture slides that I have posted seem to get the most Internet traffic from search engines. Anyway, with the posting problems I was having, I haven't uploaded any of the scripture slides that I have been working. So, here they are for your enjoyment. Click on the slide to get the higher resolution, better quality picture.

At the first of the year, Don did a seven-part series entitled "A Word to the Wise" where he discussed practical life issues with guidance from the book of Proverbs. So, I did a bunch of Proverbs slides. The Proverbs about wives, husbands, and marriage were not created for the "Word to the Wise Series" but were created for the recent "The Two Shall Become One" series.

Proverbs

Proverbs 1:8 - father's instruction mother's teachingProverbs 1:8

Proverbs 2:6 - For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understandingProverbs 2:6

Proverbs 3:6 - in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straightProverbs 3:6

Proverbs 3:9-10 - Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wineProverbs 3:9-10

Proverbs 6:23 - For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to lifeProverbs 6:23

Proverbs 10:4 - Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealthProverbs 10:4
(I don't really like this one...I need to learn how to do masking or layering or something better)

Proverbs 11:13 - A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secretProverbs 11:13

Proverbs 11:15 - He who puts up security for another will surely sufferProverbs 11:15

Proverbs 14:17 - A quick-tempered man does foolish thingsProverbs 14:17

Proverbs 15:5 - A fool spurns his father's discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.Proverbs 15:5

Proverbs 18:22 - He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORDProverbs 18:22

Proverbs 19:14 - Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORDProverbs 19:14

Proverbs 20:20 - If a man curses his father or mother, his lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darknessProverbs 20:20

Proverbs 21:13 - If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answeredProverbs 21:13

Proverbs 22:1 - A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.Proverbs 22:1

Proverbs 27:15 - A quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy dayProverbs 27:15
(I made this one as a joke. I double-dog dare anyone to actually use this one.)

Proverbs 31:10 - A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.Proverbs 31:10

This is the most recent slide I made. Don spoke just this past Sunday on this verse.

Deuteronomy 6:4 The Lord our God is one GodDeuteronomy 6:4

I made the next several slides for a sermon Don did entitled the "Abundant Life."

Ephesians 2:6 Resurrection Raised from death to lifeEphesians 2:6

Jeremiah 29:11 - plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a futureJeremiah 29:11

John 10:10 - I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullJohn 10:10

John 15:11 - joy may be in you and that your joy may be completeJohn 15:11

Philippians 2:5-7 attitude equality with God something to be grasped made himself nothing taking the very nature of a servantPhilippians 2:5-7

Philippians 4_4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!Philippians 4:4

Psalm 16:11 - You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right handPsalm 16:11

These last two (with some of the ones from Proverbs) were for the series on Marriage.

Song Of Solomon 4:10 - My Bride, my very own, you have stolen my heart! With one glance from your eyes and the glow of your necklace, you have stolen my heart.Song Of Solomon 4:10
(I read through the book of Song of Solomon to find any passages that could be used. I had forgotten how explicit the book is. Even though it is very graphic, the author's tone exudes the purity of innocence in a marital relationship. Even so, I still became very uncomfortable reading the book; but not because of its frankness. Rather, I felt like I was intruder in the sacred intimacy.)

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for herEphesians 5:25

No new Sermon on Mount Slides

My Father-in-Law was in the hospital this weekend when I usually work on my slides. I was at the hospital and didn't get a chance to make any new ones. He passed away on Sunday night.

I will be doing the Christmas slides from here until Christmas. I made some last year which I will post later and I will probably try to create a few new ones.

Sermon on the Mount Scripture Slides

I have been working on making scripture slides that come from the Sermon on the Mount. I've already done the beatitudes. Here is the next set.

Matthew 5:13, salt of the earth
You're going to notice an unintentional theme this week with one word being bigger and a different font than the rest.

See what I mean? I guess I am got caught in an uncreative cyclone.

Fear not, the one word bigger theme will return shortly.

See, I told you. I really like this one. Making the "burning" look on Angry was really easy. I love the ability to Google different Photoshop techniques and find answers.

I really struggled with how to best present this one. I would've liked to a black background with a hint of a womans' body coming down the side. But I figured that might be going to far. Then I stumbled across the lipstick and knew I had a winner. I was still a little worried about displaying this one because our western church culture does not like to talk about lust. I did receive one question about this slide from the worship leader. If somebody else asks or I get asked to speak with the Shepherds, I have my three justifications.
  1. I am doing a series of slides based on the Sermon of the Mount
  2. This scripture comes directly from Jesus' mouth and if somebody has an issue with me displaying something Jesus said, maybe the problem is them...not me. If you don't like the message, don't blame the messenger.
  3. Of all the scriptures that I have displayed, this one is probably the most relevant. I would wager that 10 out of 10 men in our congregation need to be reminded of this scripture. If somebody is offended by the message, perhaps it is because he was pricked by it.
Finally, one of the reasons I really enjoy creating these slides is that it gives me an opportunity to evoke an emotion. Our Western culture is so focused on knowledge of the scriptures, that they sometimes forget the feelings that ooze out of scripture. Scripture is meant to evoke an emotional response that prompts action. Eastern cultures speak in word pictures for a reason. Communication is emotion. Rarely do people remember exactly what a speaker said, but they will remember how they felt. By marrying a picture and a scripture together I seek to create an emotional response...I seek to explain the scripture in a way that can be remembered.

Per request, the Scripture Slides are also saved as MS PowerPoint Presentation for you. The presentation automatically progresses every 7 seconds and loops until "Esc" is pushed. I've gone back to all the past Scripture Slide posts and placed a link to download the MS PowerPoint Presentation for those as well.

Scripture Slides for this week

Here are the scripture slides I did this week. They are very random in nature.

This one required me to use a tutorial on how to make a branded look in Photoshop.

I tried to make this one look like those "Inspirational Posters" that business display to encourage their employees. I thought that using the inspiration concept overlayed with the boasting concept was quite contradictory. It has a hint of irony, especially with the verse being about the proper way to boast. Also, I had hoped that the really large "Boasting" word would attract attention to the screen as that is not something one would usually see in a church.

If I really had any Photoshop sK177z I would've been able to make the letters behind the glass magnify and look warped as actually happens when you try read something through a glass of water.

At first I tried to make the verse appear to be "forged" into the anvil using the branding technique. However, I couldn't get it to be readable. Erin loved the font choice with this one.

Psalm 46

Part of my ministry at church is the creation of the announcement slides that run before and after worship. Besides the announcements I also display welcome slides, no food, no cell phone, and scripture slides. This week I am extra proud of the scripture slides because they were a collaboratives effort with Erin. Her insight and ideas proved invaluable.

All of the slides this week come from Psalm 46.

Psalm 46

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A song.
1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.

5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah

8 Come and see the works of the LORD,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields with fire.

10 "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth."

11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah
